This article explains the differences between fixed and variable dot sizes and how to adjust these settings for optimal results with your Mimaki JV5.
Dot Size Explained: Fixed Dots and Variable Dots
The resolution referenced as ND (Normal Data) utilizes a Large Fixed Dot. In contrast, resolutions labeled as VD (Variable Data) employ a predetermined mix of small, medium, and large dots.
The JV5 drivers offer options to force a specific dot size and allows you to control the percentage of small and medium dots through the Vardot Level (%):
- Vardot Level (%): This setting represents the percentage of small and medium drop sizes in relation to the maximum density of the large drop. A higher percentage indicates increased use of small and medium drops. The default value is approximately 80%, depending on the selected resolution.
Dot Type Options
- Automatic: Utilizes the predetermined mix of small, medium, and large dots based on the resolution.
- Small: Uses small dots only.
- Medium: Uses medium dots only.
- Large: Uses large dots only.
These drop/dot settings should primarily be adjusted when micro-banding issues arise; in 99% of cases, the default settings are adequate.
Wave Shape Options: Default; WF1 - WF8
This setting defines the type of interweaving utilized in the print pattern. WF1-WF8 alters the shape of the interweaving pattern, providing flexibility based on specific printing needs.
