Windows 7 network shares: issues to reconnect

If you are experiencing issues when mounting or accessing network shares of a Windows 7 machine (from Mac OS or Linux), or issues when genererating files on a network shares after some time, this is probably due to a very typical memory cache issue on the Windows side related to the sharing mechanism.

The issue often occurs after the share has been successfully mounted for some time (so it worked well before) and is more likely to happen when ripping very large files.

Possible error messages:

On MacOS:

- ERROR 36

On Linux:

- mount error(12): Cannot allocate memory

- mount error(121): Remote I/O error

- File exists error

- No more memory

- Impossible to remount the share

Problem:

Impossible to create new files on the Share.

Impossible to mount the share again.

Solution:

Without any modification a reboot of the Windows can solve the issue to be able to work again with the network share but the problem will appear again at a later time as the issue is linked to the sharing parameters of the Windows system.

Warning:

The following solution is modifying the registry of your Windows.

It's highly recommended to backup your registry before attempting to modify it!
The registry is a core component of the Windows system and wrong manipulations in it can corrupt the system. Caldera is not providing support on your Windows system in case of a problem. If you apply the following solution it's at your own risk.

However we are quite sure of what the modification bellow does and what to expect: if you do exactly what is indicated there should be no issue.

The solution is to change the behavior of the Windows 7 Sharing system.

Two ways to do it:

1) Download and unzip the attached file of this article on your Windows PC.
2) Double-click on the .reg file extracted from the .zip file.
OR
1) Open the Windows Registry
2) Go to  HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\
3) Modify LargeSystemCache
4) Set to(0 by default)
5) Go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\
6) Modify Size
7) Set to 3 (1 by default)

Reboot is required to apply the changes.
