How to install NVIDIA drivers on Debian Linux 8, 9 and 10?

If you are using an NVIDIA graphics card with Debian Linux, it is recommended to install the NVIDIA drivers.

This installation will provide additional graphical settings, such as missing monitor resolutions, and enable you to utilize CalderaRIP's hardware acceleration (if your license includes this option).

You can check your Debian Linux version by using this article: How to Check Your Debian Version?

  Warning

Do not print or use CalderaRIP during the driver's installation process. You must reboot the computer at the end of the installation.

Debian 8 (Jessie) and 9 (Stretch)

  1. To install the NVIDIA drivers, you can download them here.
  2. Go to the Downloads folder and double-click on the installation file to start the installation. It will ask you for the root password to validate the launch of the installation. If you have problems with the installation, please refer to this article.
  3. Once the installation is over, verify that your monitor cable is connected to your graphics card, then reboot the computer.

Debian 10 (Buster)

The previous drivers will not work on Debian 10. For this operating system, you must install the package available at the end of this article (or by clicking here).

  Info

As this package downloads the drivers from the internet, you must check that your computer has internet access; without this access, it will not work.

1. The first step is to verify that the Debian repositories on your computer are correctly set.

Repositories indicate the location where the system will try to connect to download its packages.

Launch the MATE Terminal from the "Applications -> System Tools" menu, type "su -" in it and validate with the root password (it's to become rooted in it).

Update the list of repositories for the Debian packages by editing the file "/etc/apt/sources.list".

To edit the file, type in the terminal:

pluma /etc/apt/sources.list

The repositories for Debian Buster should be:

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free

deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free

deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free

deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free

Disable all other repositories in the file by putting a # symbol in front of their lines.
Save the changes before exiting the file.

2. Now that the system knows where to look for the packages, you have to download the list of available packages.

To do that, type in terminal (still as root):
apt-get update

It should update the packages and indicate that it's done.

If it tells you that there are some duplicate repositories during the process, then check the error message to see in which file and line they are (usually will be in folder /etc/apt/sources.list.d/) and disable them by editing this file (with "pluma" as before) and putting a # symbol in front of these lines.
Run the update command to be sure all is done correctly after the change.

Once the update is done without issues, you can close the Terminal.

3. Download the NVIDIA driver package attached at the end of this article (very small package).

Double-click on it, then drag and drop the folder to your Downloads folder (it will extract it).

Go inside the NVIDIA folder you extracted and double-click on the installation file to start the installation. It will ask you for the root password to validate the launch of the installation.

Once the installation is over, verify that your monitor cable is connected to your graphics card, then reboot the computer.
