How to extract metadata from the FileMan? (With example files)

This feature is exclusive to CalderaCare subscribers.

This article provides a step-by-step guide on using the SmartImport with a practical case. We'll walk you through the process, using sample files to demonstrate how to set up and execute file processing effectively.

Step 1: Download the test files

For this practical case, we will use a printer named CalderaJet and this printer has two QuickPrints named test1 and test2:

Here are three test files, which call out the printer name (CalderaJet), preset or QuickPrint (test1 and test2), and copies (CalderaRIP will only extract the number):

Step 2: Load the test files

After downloading them, go to CalderaRIP > Fileman > Setup > Processing tab > (Check) Extract metadata from the filename. As you will see next, FileMan is configured to extract the metadata from the filename:

Pattern used: *_@(printer)_@(preset)_@(copies), which means that the software will extract the information from the file name (information set in bold in the files above).

Data in the file name before the asterisk or * will be ignored.

(Optional) Step 3: Enable verbose processing

Loading the files with the option Verbose processing enabled will provide detailed feedback when clicking on FileMan's Errors button. This option can be useful if the meta-extraction does not work correctly and for general troubleshooting purposes:

If the pattern has been successfully configured the Verbose processing can be disabled.

Step 4: Verify the processing

Once the job is in the ImageBar, it will configure the printer driver with the metadata:

  Info

The loading message (Not found) refers to the media size which is in this example not configured and will therefore be ignored.

  • Used file: SMALL Sticker Bird Green_CalderaJet_test1_11.pdf, will configure the CalderaJet with 11 copies and use the test1 QuickPrint:

  • Used file:  SMALL_Sticker_Bird_Cyan_CalderaJet_test2_10 copies.pdf, will configure the CalderaJet with 10 copies and use the test2 QuickPrint:

When attempting to use the wrong printer, a message will be displayed:

(Optional) Step 5: Configure a hotfolder
