Info
We recommend that you include your IT staff to assist you in the process, especially if you are not comfortable with the terms used here.
If you run a Caldera software on a virtual machine, the process of registration/activation and attachment of the license is a bit different, as there are steps to do on the physical machine and steps to do on the virtual machine (VM).
The most common case is to use a Linux virtual machine on a Windows computer, but other combinations may be possible. To do so, you need to use a specific software providing hardware virtualization like VirtualBox, VMware or Parallels (on macOS) for instance.
The process differs depending on if you have a software-based license or a hardware license (a dongle).
Info
The online license management application used by Caldera is Sentinel. This application is automatically installed at your first license registration from CalderaDock. Note that it requires port 8443 or 443 along with the local firewall to be opened in order to work correctly.
Software license
On the physical machine
- If not already done, the first step is to download CalderaDock application from WorkSpace and install it. To find help for the installation process depending on your operating system, please refer to this HelpDesk section.
- From CalderaDock application, you need to register/activate your license in the Licenses tab. For more details on the process, follow the steps explained in this article. Stop before the step "Attaching the license", this will be done on the virtual machine.
On the virtual machine
First, the virtual machine needs to be connected to the network to at least access the physical machine that hosts the license that has just been activated. The network can be in bridged mode or shared mode.
You can find some help online, depending on the software that you use. Please find here guides for the software mentioned in the introduction of this article:

Info
When a Caldera software runs on a virtual machine with a software license, the automatic renewal of the license is not applied. You need to reattach it manually by clicking the "Reattach" button when it's required. For more information on how a software-based license and its dates work, have a look at this article.
Hardware license
On the physical machine
Connect the dongle key.
No need to install CalderaDock on your physical machine.
On the virtual machine
First, you need to pass through the dongle from the physical machine to the virtual machine, in order to be recognized. The dongle's name is SafeNet Inc. Sentinel HL.
