Debian Linux black screen - potential full disk

 

 

Symptom: Black screen when starting Debian or unable to login.

 

A typical symptom is a full hard drive and usually this is caused by a Spooler being full.

Clean temporary folder (/home/tmp) on recovery mode. With version 13.1 or newer the temp folder moved to /opt/caldera/var/tmp

Steps:

1 - Restart and open advanced options on boot menu

2 - select (recovery mode)

3 - wait for this symbol '#', you may have to hit 'Enter' a couple times. After the boot is finished you might be asked to enter the root password (You might have the hit enter first before entering the actual root password). The root password is typically: caldera

Then run the following commands.

Be careful with the following commands. A typing error could erase your entire system. Make sure to type it exactly as shown.

 

1. The below command is "rm (space) -Rf (space) /home/tmp/*" and press enter:

rm -Rf /home/tmp/*

 

2. The below command is "rm (space) -Rf (space) /opt/caldera/var/tmp/*" and press enter:

rm -Rf /opt/caldera/var/tmp/*

 

3. reboot now

** Attention, this will erase spooler information which may lose CostView information.
