This article outlines the multilayer printing capabilities available for swissQprint Topi 5 and Oryx 5 printers in CalderaRIP.
How multilayer printing works
These printers use a controller to manage printing. Multilayer jobs are submitted and printed one layer at a time.
swissQprint Topi 5 and Oryx 5 are available in two driver types. Choose the driver that matches the multilayer workflow you need:

Non-ML drivers: Spot Inks and basic multilayer printing
Applicable to swissQprint-Topi-5 and swissQprint-Oryx-5.
In addition to standard Spot Ink printing, these drivers can be used to create basic multilayer jobs using the same image, through the Spot Ink settings in Page Setup.
Resolution
The available resolutions are defined by the SQPE file imported from your printer’s Lory controller.
By default, the resolution list is disabled and Auto is selected. This helps prevent configuration errors when preparing multilayer jobs. If you are not preparing a multilayer job, clear Auto to select a resolution manually.

Where the Spot print mode is available, only one layer is printed, containing the areas with white data. The resolution cannot be changed in this mode.
Print Mode and Quality
Print mode: No print mode settings are available for Primer. Primer is printed in a single layer.

- Primer 2
- Primer 3
Available print modes:
- Underlay (Default): Prints white underneath the colors.
- Spot: Prints white as a spot color.
- Color-White-Color: Prints white between two color layers.
Available qualities:
- Translucent (Default)
- Semi-translucent
- Opaque
Available print modes:
- Overlay (Default): Prints white over the colors.
- Spot: Prints white as a spot color.
- Color-White-Color: Prints white between two color layers.
Available qualities:

Available print modes:
- Overlay (Default): Prints varnish over the colors.
- Spot: Prints varnish as a spot color.
Available qualities:
- Matt (Default)

ML drivers: Advanced multilayer printing
Applicable to swissQprint-Topi-5-ML and swissQprint-Oryx-5-ML.
Available from CalderaRIP V19.2, ML drivers use the Layers arrangement workflow to create advanced multilayer jobs.

For these drivers, the former White-U and White-O options are combined into a single White behavior.
When a White layer is selected, the available settings are set by default to the recommended values. If needed, you can configure the layer’s resolution, quality, and print mode directly in the Print Module.
