4. Linux Debian installation

This article is for historical purposes only, as recent versions of Caldera software are no longer compatible with Debian Linux. Learn more.

  Info

We recommend that you include your IT staff to assist you in the Linux installation process, especially if you are not comfortable with the terms used here.

After booting the computer from the USB flash drive (refer to this article for details about this step), you get to the Linux Debian installer.

  Recommendation

Before starting the Linux Debian installation, we strongly advise connecting the computer to the Internet as it will ease the installation and prevent further issues when installing some programs.

       Global settings

      1. You arrive on the main menu of the Linux Debian installer. We recommend using the Graphical Debian Installer as it will allow a user-friendly installation.

      2. Select the language. This language will be used for the installation process and will be the default language of the operating system.

      3. Select your location. It will be used to set the time zone.

      4. Choose a keyboard configuration. It is important to make the right keyboard choice as it may cause issues when typing passwords later.

        Network configuration

      5. If the system has multiple network interfaces, they are detected and displayed here. The one selected by default is the interface that is already connected to the network. Keep this one.

        Troubleshooting: no network interface detected

At this step, if the installation wizard informs you that no network card was detected, it means that the current Debian distribution does not have a compatible driver. Internet connection would be then impossible. In this situation, we recommend continuing with the installation normally. After installing Linux Debian and CalderaRIP, it will be possible to download the missing driver from Workspace.

      6. Enter your company domain. If it is unknown, you can leave the field empty.

        6_Domain_name660px.png

      7. The hostname is a single name that identifies the current computer in the network. Make sure to use an identifiable name. We recommend using "CalderaRIP".

          Info

When setting up multiple RIP stations in the same local network, make sure to indicate it in the hostname. For instance: CalderaRIP-1, CalderaRIP-2, etc.

        Users and passwords

      8. First, choose a root password. This password is the administrator password, and it will be asked each time system changes are made. We recommend using “caldera”.

      9. Then, choose a name for the new user account. We recommend using “caldera”.

      10. Choose a password for the "caldera" account. We recommend using “caldera”.

      11. Finally, choose a username for the "caldera" account". Once again, we recommend using "caldera".

        Partition disks

      12. In this part, you will define where to install the new system. The most common and easiest choice is Guided - use entire disk.

        9.1_Partition_disks660px.png

      13. Then, select the disk where you want to install the system. There are currently 2 disks available: the internal hard drive and the USB flash drive we plugged in earlier. Select the internal hard drive.

        9.2_Partition_disks660px.png

      14. Select how the disk will be partitioned. We advise All files in one partition.

          Info

Separate /home partition is useful when there is a small SSD for the system, and a larger HDD for the documents.

        9.3_Partition disks660px.png

      15. Here is an overview of the current setup. Select Finish partitioning and write changes to disk to validate.

        9.4_Partition_disks660px.png

      16. Finally, select Yes to write changes to the disk. This action will destroy all existing data from the hard drive. The installation process should last around 5 minutes.

        Package manager

      17. Once the installation is completed, you will be asked if you want to use a network mirror. A network mirror is a repository where you can download additional Linux packages and updates later on. We recommend using a network mirror if a network connection is available while installing Linux Debian.

        10_Network_mirror660px.png

      18. Select a repository from where you will be able to download additional resources. It is recommended to select your country or a nearby country to optimize downloads.

        11_Select_a_repo660px.png

      19. Select a server. Usually, deb.debian.org is a smart choice.

        12_Select_a_server660px.png

      20. If a proxy is required to access the outside world, enter the proxy information here. Typically, to be entered on big corporate networks, otherwise this can be left blank.

        Finish the installation

      21. The installation is done, and it is time to boot into the new system. Remove the USB flash drive to boot into the new system rather than restarting the installation. Then click Continue.

      22. After logging into the “caldera” user account, here is what a fresh Debian looks like.

          Tips & tricks

If the resolution of your monitor was not automatically detected, you can set up it manually. Go to System > Control Center > Displays. The minimum required resolution for CalderaRIP is 1280 x 1024 px.

Next step

Once your operating system is installed, the next step is to install CalderaDock.
