CalderaRIP updates and version management

The update process for CalderaRIP has changed starting with Version 15. In this article, we will outline the changes made to help you understand the latest update policy implemented.

  Good to know

If your CalderaRIP software exhibits unexpected behavior, it is important to always check that the latest version of the software is installed.

Software upgrades for older versions

Until CalderaRIP V14, two types of files were required to ensure you had the latest updated version of CalderaRIP:

1. Default installation package

You had first to install the default installation package of CalderaRIP. It was available in:

  • .dmg format for macOS
  • .iso format for Linux
V13 (or after) V12 (or before)

Starting with CalderaRIP V13, there are also two subtypes of installation packages:

  • Full version package: It contains the software and all printer drivers. This package is approximately 3 GB to 5 GB.
  • Light version package: It contains only the CalderaRIP software. The printer drivers have to be downloaded and installed separately. This package is approximately 1,5 GB to 2 GB.

These packages were fixed and corresponded to a minor or major version of CalderaRIP (e.g., V13, V13.1, V14, V14.1, etc.). To obtain the latest update, also referred to as a "build", it was necessary to download an additional patch.

Installation packages were available in WorkSpace only, in the now removed “Download and install” tab. As you will see in the next chapter, recent installation packages can now be found in:

  • CalderaDock > Applications
  • WorkSpace > Other downloads

2. The build patch [Deprecated]

The build patch, also referred to as the update patch, included bug fixes for CalderaRIP and occasionally introduced new features. For example, for CalderaRIP V14, there was a build "201207",  and for CalderaRIP V14.1, a build "210820".

By installing the latest available build, users ensured they were using the most up-to-date version of CalderaRIP, complete with all the latest patches and updates.

Similar to the installation packages, the build patches could only be downloaded from the now removed “Download and install” tab.

The final build patch released was for CalderaRIP V14.1, and no further update patches were issued beyond this version.

Software updates for recent versions

As build or update patches were only available on WorkSpace and were not immediately installed during the default installation, we observed that users sometimes encountered issues that had already been fixed in the most recent version of their CalderaRIP.

This was often due to their unawareness of the existence of builds or a lack of knowledge about the update process. Consequently, we decided to simplify our installation and update process.

Starting with CalderaRIP V15, no new update patches were available to upgrade the software to the latest build version. Instead, the latest build was directly included in the default installation package of CalderaRIP, ensuring that every installation was always up to date.
