With Canon Colorado M-series multilayer workflows not using PrismaGuideXL, a job can appear to rip correctly in CalderaRIP even when the multilayer settings are not valid for the printer. In this situation, the ripped file may not appear on the printer controller, or it may appear but not print.
Symptoms
- The multilayer job completes RIP processing in CalderaRIP
- The ripped file does not appear on the Canon Colorado printer controller
- The file reaches the controller but does not print
- No obvious RIP error is shown
Cause
This behavior is usually caused by an incorrect multilayer driver configuration. On Canon Colorado M-series printers, each layer must use the correct setting in Page setup > White. If the wrong setting is used, CalderaRIP may still appear to process the file successfully, but the printer may not accept or print the resulting multilayer file.
This can also happen if settings were changed in the driver and the multilayer configuration was not saved again afterward.
Colorado layer order
- Layer 5 = top Color layer
- Layers 4 to 1 = layers underneath
Required layer settings
- Color layer: Layers > Custom > CMYK
- White layer: White layer > Custom > Spot White
- Blockout layer: White layer > Custom > Blockout
Resolution
- Open the Canon Colorado M-series multilayer configuration in CalderaRIP.
- Verify the intended layer order. On the Colorado, Layer 5 is the top color layer, and Layers 4 to 1 are below it.
- For each layer, open Page setup > White and check the assigned option.
- Apply the correct setting for each layer:
- Color layer = Layers > Custom > CMYK
- White layer = White layer > Custom > Spot White
- Blockout layer = White layer > Custom > Blockout
- If any driver settings were changed, save or re-save the multilayer configuration.
- RIP the file again and resend it.
- Confirm that the file now appears on the printer controller and prints correctly.
Example: 5-layer job
For a 5-layer job with a top Color layer and four White layers underneath, use the following configuration in Page setup > White:
- Layer 5: Layers > Custom > CMYK
- Layer 4: White layer > Custom > Spot White
- Layer 3: White layer > Custom > Spot White
- Layer 2: White layer > Custom > Spot White
- Layer 1: White layer > Custom > Spot White
Important note
A successful RIP in CalderaRIP does not always mean the multilayer file is valid for the Canon Colorado controller. If the job rips but does not appear on the controller or does not print, review the multilayer layer settings first.
When selecting the non custom White Underflood, White Overflood the Colorado will treat it as a 2-layer job so multilayer jobs will not appear on the printer controller.
