The following information applies to various HP Latex models. Please refer to your printer's specific documentation for details on compatibility.
This article explains how to configure the Spot (SP), Underflood (UF), and Overflood (OF) quality modes available on some HP printer drivers, such as the HP Latex 700W/800W used here as an example.
Keep reading for the step-by-step instructions, or watch the following video for an overview of the complete white-ink printing workflow with HP Latex 700W/800W printers and CalderaRIP:
Sandwich Printing
Spot, Underflood, and Overflood are separate white-ink qualities, not steps in the Sandwich sequence. To print white between color layers, see How to use Sandwich quality mode.
If you previously configured a Sandwich sequence, deactivate it before using SP, UF, or OF qualities.
Before You Start
The example uses:
- A PDF file, City_WINTER_WhiteSpot.pdf, containing a spot color named White.
- A substrate preset named My custom film, compatible with the selected white-ink quality.
Before configuring the job in the Print Module, prepare a compatible substrate preset on the printer. In this example, the custom substrate is created on the printer's panel. Follow your printer's documentation for its media-management procedure and available qualities. See HP support for details.
Set Up the White-Ink Job
Load the File
- Load the PDF using FileManager.
- Drag the image from ImageBar into the printer's Print Module.
Select the Print Settings
- Select your Media preset and a supported Resolution and Mode. The example uses My custom film, 600, and CMYK8; these values are not requirements for every printer.
-
Select the required Quality: SP, UF, or OF, where available:
Quality White-ink workflow Spot (SP) Print white ink using the configured white separation. Follow your printer's documentation for this quality's printing behavior. Underflood (UF) Print white on the substrate, then print color over the white layer. Overflood (OF) Print white over the color layer. - Open Page Setup.
Enable the White Separation
- In the White tab, select Enable Separation.
- For the example PDF, set Method to Use a Spot Color and check that the selected spot is White.
- Select Hide background image to inspect the areas that will print with white ink.
Auto detection
When Auto detection is enabled and a White spot is detected, Use a Spot Color is selected automatically. Check the selected spot and the white preview before printing.
The tabs below illustrate each quality. These are alternative examples, not consecutive steps: open the tab corresponding to your selected quality.
Quality Mode Examples
Select an SP quality (1), open Page Setup (2), and enable the white separation using Use a Spot Color (3):
Select Hide background image (1) to check the white separation:
Select a quality with a UF suffix. The white layer prints on the substrate, followed by color:
With the UF quality selected (1), open Page Setup (2) and enable the white separation using Use a Spot Color (3):
Select Hide background image (1) to check the white separation:
Select a quality with an OF suffix. The white layer prints over color:
With the OF quality selected (1), open Page Setup (2) and enable the white separation using Use a Spot Color (3):
Select Hide background image (1) to check the white separation:
Print and Track the Job
- Check that the selected quality is compatible with your media preset, white separation is enabled, and Sandwich mode is deactivated.
- Click Print.
- Monitor the job in Spooler.
