Spot Colors "custom" remapping limitation with Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE)

The following applies to users of CalderaRIP V15.0.2 or later, as earlier versions are limited to processing up to 27 spot channels.

Manually remapping Spot Colors to "custom" values enables you to specify ink combinations for a given Spot Color name (either from a library of spot colors or a custom-entered value) in the Spot Colors window of the Print Module.

In the example below, we forced the MyBlue Spot Color to be printed as CMYK 80/10/0/0:

Another example would be to set the MyRed Spot Color to 100% Red and all the rest to 0%, in a CMYKR printing mode.

Limitation

"Custom" remapping is currently limited to 127 Spot Colors, minus the number of inks used in the current printing mode. This means that...

  • 123 spots max in CMYK
  • 122 in CMYKR,
  • 121 in CMYKOG,
  • Etc.

When mapping Spot Colors automatically with ICC, there is no limit:

Warning messages

When using CalderaRIP, the following limitation warnings will appear upon print job submission if a file contains more than the maximum spot colors allowed.

Proofing configuration

In a "Proofing Configuration," with a simulation profile activated in the Colors window, as shown in this example:

When you set the Work in option to "Output space" in the Spot Color > Rules tab:

You will get the following warning:

When the output is NColor (with or without simulation profile), for example, using the "CMYKOG" print mode:
