XQuartz/X11: Text Misplacement and Window Size Issues in CalderaRIP interface

This article outlines the steps to troubleshoot issues related to misplaced texts and improper window sizing in XQuartz, which may arise after updates to XQuartz or macOS.

  Info

Since CalderaRIP is a Unix-based application, it relies on XQuartz to provide a graphical user interface (GUI) for macOS systems. Learn more.

Problem

Users may encounter issues where texts in XQuartz appear misplaced or the window size does not refresh correctly. These problems are often linked to updates in XQuartz or macOS, which can disrupt the software's ability to manage screen size and window placement effectively.

Before proceeding with any solutions, it is advisable to check the version of XQuartz currently installed on your system.

Checking the Version of XQuartz

To check the version of XQuartz installed on your macOS, follow these steps:

  1. Open XQuartz.
  2. Click on the "XQuartz" menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
  3. Select "About X11" from the dropdown menu.
  4. A window will appear displaying the current version of XQuartz. If you have the latest version or a beta version, based on the list on this website, that is probably the cause of the problem.

Solutions

Although there are Terminal commands available to address the issue, they may not be suitable for all users.

A temporary workaround is to quit and restart XQuartz, which may restore functionality until the next idle period. If the workaround does not work, you can either downgrade XQuartz to a previous version or downgrade macOS.

Downgrading XQuartz

  1. Visit the XQuartz download site.
  2. Download a version that is earlier than your current installation. Officially compatible version is 2.8.1.
  3. Install it.
  4. After completing the downgrade, reboot your computer to apply the changes.

In the future, if prompted by macOS to upgrade XQuartz again, choose "Skip this version."
