Spectrophotometer setup
Measure mode
- Spectral: by default, the spectrophotometer makes spectral measurements.
- Lab: when selected, measurements are converted into Lab coordinates.
Measurement condition
- A (M0): does not correctly consider the Optical Brightness Agents (OBA) and ink fluorescence. The UV quantity of the illuminant used by the device is not normalized, so the measurement of a patch can vary depending on the device. We do not recommend using this condition.
- D50 (M1): complies with the standard condition of visual examination. Considers the OBA and ink fluorescence. The UV quantity of the illuminant used by the device is normalized.
- D50 UV-Cut (M2): the illuminant used by the device filters UV to ignore the effects of OBA and the ink fluorescence. This condition is rarely used, only to reflect UV-free environments like museums.
- Polarization filter (M3): the illuminant used by the device is fitted with a polarization filter to ignore the effects of OBA, the ink fluorescence, and also the ink brightness.
- Emissive: condition to measure a patch on a screen, not on a media.
Positioning
- Automatic: marks are automatically detected by the device. If there is a connected camera, it will be used by default. Keep reading or click here for more details.
- Manual: point manually the marks in the corners of the test pattern.
Type
- Reflection: select this measurement type for opaque media.
- Transmission: select this measurement type for transparent media.
Speed
- Fast: the device is directly in contact with the test pattern, this mode is optimized to go fast.
- Contactless: the device is not in contact with the test pattern. You must be vigilant when using this mode because if the light in the room is not normalized, it can influence the measurement.
- Up-down (slow): the device is directly in contact with the test pattern, this mode is optimized to increase the accuracy of measurements.
Enable the camera (Disable target recognition in older versions)
The spectrophotometer can be fitted with a camera for automatic measurements. In this case, the camera takes a picture of the test pattern and uses this picture for measurements.
The camera is enabled by default but if this is not what you require, uncheck the Enable the camera setting.
Introduced in CalderaRIP V15.1.2.
If you do not want to use the camera, uncheck the Disable target recognition setting.
Tips & tricks
If the camera is not detected, try unplugging and reconnecting the spectrophotometer.
Measurements per patch
More measurements per patch improve the accuracy. You have the choice between, 1, 3, or 5 measurements per patch.
Aperture
Several lens widths are available:
- Automatic (the device selects the aperture that best matches the detected media)
- 2 mm
- 6 mm
- 8 mm
Recommendations
- For "classic" media, a wide aperture can improve accuracy but measurements at 2mm are consistent.
- For UV ink-based prints a wide aperture is recommended.
- For special media, such as textiles, an 8mm aperture should be chosen to consider the mesh.

Network
Enable the Network to connect your spectrophotometer by wifi instead of USB. Fill in the Device IP and the TCP port of your device to enable the connection.
Action buttons
- Upgrade firmware: after downloading the last firmware of your spectrophotometer in Barbieri Gateway Software, you can install it by clicking this button. You will be redirected to a file browser to select the file corresponding to the last firmware you have downloaded.
- Service report: the device will execute a seld-test and will write the report into a file.
- Send config file: you should only send a configuration file when instructed to do so by the technical support. A configuration file is a .txt file describing certain properties specific to your measuring device (like the White point).
- Get device information: get information from your spectrophotometer.
