Inkjet resolution in EFI printers

The EFI printers have a specific printing technology, as well as a specific way of expressing the resolution/mode/quality of the prints. That is why in this article we will explain a bit about it so that you can get the most out of your printer with CalderaRIP.

EFI's printing workflows

This manufacturer's software comes with preconfigured print modes that allow different resolutions to be achieved by combining the following settings:

  • Passes
  • Direction: can be unidirectional or bidirectional
  • Carriage speed: can be "high-quality" (standard speed) or "high-speed" (maximal speed)

The passes of the EFI printers have the particularity that they can be increased through what they call "Extracts". Increasing the number of passes decreases the printing speed, since the process is not carried out on all printing lines simultaneously and, in turn, this increases the addressable resolution. The apparent resolution can also be increased since these devices also have a technology called "Smoothing", which adds smooth gradients in some of the passes.

Case of the model Pro 16H

According to its official operations guide (2019), "the EFI Pro 16h printer has many different resolutions and options for creating .bco files for printing at different speeds and output qualities. (...) When selecting a workflow for file preparation in their GUI, be aware that different options result in different printer output speeds and can have different output qualities as well. The charts below contain several workflows that EFI has found useful in day-to-day operations.

Note: Different printer modes have different intended viewing distances for the printed output. The faster output speeds are intended to be used when creating prints meant to be viewed from more considerable distances".
