FileMan - Actions - Setup

The rasterization process can be influenced by several parameters that affect the characteristics of the generated image, including screening angle, 1-bit image frequency, image type and depth, page size, resolution, and transparency plane.

You can configure these parameters by clicking the Setup button in the FileMan module, which opens a window with three tabs containing settings for the images you are loading or saving:

RIP Parameters tab

The RIP Parameters tab is organized into four areas, each containing specific settings to optimize the rasterization process.

Preview

  • Mode: Select the color space for the file (e.g., CMYK, RGB, Greyscale).
  • Profile: Choose the ICC profile to be applied to the file.
  • Transparent White: Check this option to apply an alpha channel to your image, treating white as transparent.

Adobe PDF Print Engine Options

  • Edit PDF Passwords: Click this button to manage password protection for PDF files.
  • Overprint Options: Click this button to access settings related to overprinting for enhanced color management. You can enable/disable the options as your production requires it:
    • Disable Overprinting Simulation of Flattened Spots
    • Enable ICC Overprinting
    • Force Overprint of Black Text
    • Force Overprint of Black Line Art
    • Force All Spots to Overprint
    • Disable All Overprints
  • Enable Adobe's Advanced Spot Blending: Activates advanced blending techniques for spot colors. Learn more.
  • Enable Fine Line Rendering: Improves the rendering of fine lines in images. Learn more.
  • Enable Bicubic Resampling: Enhances image quality during resampling processes.

PS/EPS Options

  • Use PS2PDF Conversion: Enables conversion of PostScript files to PDF format.
The options button allows you to set a default page size (when this is not specified in the file), in inches or mm. You can also enable or disable the abortion of conversion (in case of PostScript errors detected).

Ghostscript has been removed in CalderaRIP V19; therefore, the following information is relevant only to users of earlier versions.

  • Use Ghostscript (Legacy): Activates legacy Ghostscript processing for compatibility with older files. Additional options available:
    • Enable Overprints: Processes all overprints contained in the document, disabling ICC calibration for previewing and printing on all overprint colors.
    • Extract Raster Images: Extracts all raster elements embedded in the PS/PDF file and places them in the ImageBar, but the image itself will not be loaded.

Common Options

  • Cut Contours menu: Choose how to handle cut contours during the rasterization process. Learn more.
  • Edit Cut Contour List...: Access the list of cut contours for editing.
  • Use PDF Box: This option allows you to select a page format from various boxes found in PDF files (Media, Crop, Trim, Bleed, or Art). If the selected box does not exist in the file, the Media box will be used instead.
  • Error If Font Substitution: Check this option to trigger an error if font substitution occurs.
  • Automatic Cropping of the Inked Area: Enables automatic cropping based on the inked area of the image.

Processing tab

The Processing tab is organized into three areas, each of which can be enabled or disabled using the corresponding checkbox.

Raster to PDF

Convert Raster to PDF Starting At: This option allows you to specify the file size (in megabytes) at which raster images will be converted to PDF. The default value is set to 1000 MB.

Extract Metadata from Filename

This area includes SmartImport settings, which are available exclusively to CalderaCare subscribers.

For comprehensive guidance on configuring and using SmartImport, please consult the dedicated article.

Local File Copy (Vectorial Files)

  • Copy Files: Choose when to make a copy of the vector files before processing. Options are: always, from removable or network devices, from removable devices, and never.
  • Destination Folder: Specify the folder where the copied files will be saved. Click the (Horizontal) Ellipsis button (  ) to open the file explorer if needed.
  • On Error: Select the action to take if an error occurs during the copy process (report the error and stop loading, or bypass the copy silently).
  • Automatically Delete Locally Copied Files: Check this option to automatically delete the locally copied files when they are no longer needed (e.g., after deletion from the ImageBar).

Misc tab

The Miscellaneous tab is organized into four areas, each containing specific settings to enhance the functionality of the FileManager.

Miscellaneous

  • Keep Image in Image's Bar When an Error Occurs: Check this option to retain the image in the ImageBar even if an error is detected, allowing you to identify the exact location of the issue.
  • Automatically Display Images After Loading/Ripping: Enable this option to automatically launch a display of the image once the RIP process is complete.
  • Display all page sizes in...: Choose the unit of measurement for displaying page sizes, with options for millimeters (mm) and inches (in).

Save Options

  • Add/Change Extension: Check this option to modify the file extension during the saving process.
  • Embed Profile (TIFF/JPEG/PSD): Enable this option to embed the ICC profile within the saved TIFF, JPEG, or PSD files.

Spot Channels in TIFF

The following settings are available in CalderaRIP from version 12.1 onwards.
You might be interested in reading: How to manage extra or spot channels in FileMan?

  • Invert When Opening: Select how to handle spot channels when opening files, with options for Auto, No, and Yes.
  • Invert When Saving: Choose whether to invert spot channels when saving, with options for Yes and No.

      Info

The Invert options are set to "Auto" by default, meaning that files such as Photoshop documents and certain TIFF files generated by recent CalderaRIP drivers will be inverted, while other file types, including those from older versions of CalderaRIP and its drivers, will remain unchanged.

Alpha-Channel Options

  • Copy Alpha-Channel to Spot Channel: Check this option to copy the alpha channel to the spot channel, with a dropdown menu to select from the detected spot colors in the file.

      Info

This option "forces" the alpha channels of files to be assigned to the selected spot channel (such as white, as shown in the following example). This is particularly useful for saving time, as it allows the Automatic separation method (Print module > Page Setup > Spot ink tab) to function without requiring further setup.

  • Delete Alpha-Channel After Copy: Enable this option to remove the alpha channel once it has been copied to the spot channel.
