Sharing a CalderaRIP license with multiple workstations [Versions 7 to 11]

For historical purposes only. Applicable to CalderaRIP versions 7 to 11.
Please note that the licensing process has undergone significant changes over the years, and the KeyManager module is now deprecated. The information presented here does not reflect the current procedure.
  1. License Server Setup
    • The CalderaRIP with the green or black USB dongle, is the license server. Install the license file on this server.
    • On new installations, the license server field should have "localhost" set as the default. For that, go to the Settings tab > Open Config > Go to the Advanced tab > On License server, type localhost > Click on the Restart button (software password will be required, "caldera"):

    • Once CalderaRIP is restarted, go again to the Settings tab > Open ServerAdmin > Click on CalServer or Setup > On the License server, type localhost > Click on the Proceed button (software password will be required, "caldera"):

  2. Configuring Client RIPs:
    • All the RIP workstations without the green USB dongle and license file are the license clients. Specify the IP address of the license server in the license server field.
    • Find the license server IP address (e.g., 10.10.10.199).
    • Then, go to the Settings tab > Open Config > Go to the Advanced tab > On the License server, type the IP (e.g. 10.10.10.199) > Click on the Restart button (software password will be required, "caldera"):

    • Once CalderaRIP is restarted, go again to the Settings tab > Open ServerAdmin > Click on CalServer or Setup >  On the License server, type the IP (e.g. 10.10.10.199) > Click on the Proceed button (software password will be required, "caldera").

        Info

The license server IP address is typically automatically assigned in the Calserver setup, but it's good practice to double-check.

Advanced Troubleshooting

If the wrong license IP address is entered, CalderaRIP may take a long time to start or the user interface may not populate properly in VirtualBox.

To quickly change the license IP address, edit the following two files:

  1. /home/caldera/.cas/.CAS.config
  2. /opt/caldera/lib/calserver.cfg

Linux-based install:

When changing the calserver.cfg file as root, restart the calserver:

  • Stop any running instance of the calserver:
  • As root: killall calserver (repeat the command till you get the message "calserver: no process found").
  • Then /opt/caldera/bin/calserver /opt/caldera/lib/calserver.cfg

OSX-based install:

The process is the same as above, except you need to locate the user-specific .cas folder.

  • For Caldera users: /CALDERADATA/Users/caldera/.cas/.CAS.config
  • For any other user: /Users/name_of_user/.cas/.CAS.config
