How to Configure Summa Dual Cutters?

The following features, which were previously included in the legacy VisualCut and GrandCut options, are now included in annual CalderaRIP subscriptions and perpetual licenses with CalderaCare.

Partners and resellers should consult the Partners Portal for details; end-users can find information on our website.

To meet the need to increase its customers' productivity, Summa's Twin Workflow allows the integration of two cutters for the same job:

  • An F series flatbed cutter
  • And a vinyl cutter (S Class 2 or S One series)
    • Camera-based vinyl cutters can use what Summa calls the Twin Mode
    • Sensor-based vinyl cutters can use the Twin X Mode

  Info

Summa's Twin Workflow is included in the manufacturer's software Pro Packs. For more details, please contact Summa directly or refer to their dedicated article.

How to Use two Summa Cutters with CalderaRIP?

Another way to benefit from this workflow, and to be able to cut a job on two cutters, is to use the Summa dual cutters specific driver in CalderaRIP.

However, this is only possible when using the Summa Twin X Mode on sensor-based cutters (like the S One Series, the S Class 2 D Series, or the S Class 2 T Series) since these can register square marks.

  Info

The Summa GoProduce driver has asymmetrical marks and can't be used for the Summa Twin mode. If required, use the SummaFlex driver instead.

Configuration

Let's see an example with the following devices:

  • Summa F1612 (flatbed cutter), using the Summa dual cutters driver that will create two cut files:
    • One for the Summa F series cutter.
    • And one for the Summa S2 series cutter.
  • Summa S2 T series (roll-to-roll cutter), using Summa S2 PostNet (panelling).

Flatbed Configuration (Summa F1612)

  1. Install the Summa Dual Cutters flatbed driver.

  2. Configure your Summa F1612 flatbed cutter. First, check the Marks placement in the corresponding Cutter Tools Configuration tab:
The cut file must have its marks located horizontally at 400.05 mm or 15.75 in, with a horizontal and vertical size of 5.00 mm or 0.20 in. Example in inches:

      Good to know

To improve your experience, these values are fixed by default in recent versions.

Roll-to-Roll Configuration (Summa S2 T Series)

  1. Install the Summa S2 PostNet Panelling roll-to-roll driver.

  2. During the installation, select the same Queue you previously selected for the flatbed driver.
In this example, the Queue would be: /opt/caldera/var/public/summa/

  3. Now you must configure your Summa S2 T Series roll cutter. In the VisualCut Interface, check the Dual cutter barcode box because the SummaFlex (OptiScout) barcodes are decimal instead of the normal PostNet Summa S2 barcodes which are hexadecimal.

      Info

As mentioned at the beginning, the SummaFlex controller can read both types of marks.

  4. You are ready to cut.
