How to link a hardware dongle via a UTN device to a virtual machine? (ESXi VMware)

In this troubleshooting guide, we will walk you through the process of installing a USB to Network Device (UTN) on Debian to enable network access to a Caldera USB dongle.

This tutorial is particularly useful when it is impossible to plug the dongle directly into the hosting PC with:

  • A virtual environment, e.g. ESXi Hypervisor VMware with virtual Debian Stretch 9.6 and CalderaRIP V13.
  • A myUTN-50 device:

      Warning

The client and UTN server communicate via the UTN port 9200. The port must not be blocked by security software (firewall). If necessary, you can change the port number and use a secure UTN SSL port. A detailed description can be found in the myUTN User Manual.

Step 1: VM Configuration

  1. Go to the ESXi Control Panel.

  2. Select the Virtual Machine:A1.jpg

  3. Click on Actions > Edit Settings:

  4. Select Add Other Device:

  5. Select USB Device:02-ADDUSBb.jpg

  6. A new Slot should appear at "New USB Device".

  7. Link it to Aladdin Knowledge Sentinel HL:03-Alladinb.jpg

Step 2: UTN Software installation

  1. Download the UTN manager related to your device here.

For example, for UTN 50 and Debian Stretch 9.6: SEH UTN Manager Version 3.1.21 for DEB-based Linux 64-bit, released on 2019-08-19

  2. Unzip the archive and double-click on each .deb file, following this order:
    • Driver
    • Services
    • Clitool
    • Manager

Step 3: UTN Configuration

  1. Start the SEH UTN Manager in Applications > System Tools:

  2. At startup, the UTN Device will try to get the IPv4 address via DHCP.
During the initial configuration, the client and UTN server must be assigned to the same local network segment.
You can configure this device to another IP, please refer to the Quick Installation Guide (Page 11):

  3. Here, a USB Hardware-based license (a dongle) has been detected:
    A.jpg

  4. It will appear in the CalderaDock app and, for users of older versions of CalderaRIP, in the KeyManager module [now DEPRECATED]: Capture_d_e_cran_2019-10-31_a__15.44.22.png

  5. You can double-check in Terminal, by typing lsusb in the command line.
Aladdin Knowledge Systems should appear, as a USB device:

    1. If the dongle has been linked to a license, you just have to select "Attach". Your VM will activate it:

    2. If the dongle is brand new, register it on WorkSpace first to retrieve the activation code from your account.
