Basic hotfolder troubleshooting

Unexpected behavior in a hotfolders module can cause disruptions to your workflow. This article outlines several troubleshooting steps to help identify and resolve common issues, allowing the automation of your production to continue.

On CalderaRIP

  1. Go to Special (or Configuration in recent versions) > Hot Folders.
    • At the bottom of the window (reports), check if any errors appear in the corresponding column.
    • Also, check if you can manually execute (release) the stuck jobs:

  2. Take a look at the /home/caldera/.cas/caldera.log file on Linux or the /Users/caldera/.cas/caldera.log file on macOS, which might have logged useful information.

      Info

You might have to replace the "caldera" username with the default username that's used on the computer.

  3. Make sure to be on the latest version and build of your CalderaRIP, as specified by your license, and also download and install the latest revisions of your printer drivers from WorkSpace.

  4. Try to reset your printer drivers and also use the same method to reset Fileman.

  5. Try to Clean the tmp or spooler folder.

      Info

If possible, also enable the Spooler management by enabling "Max number of non-printable jobs" for each of your printer drivers: HowTo Manage Spooler Print Queue.

  6. Go to Special (or Configuration in recent versions) > Hot Folders > Edit > Time-out, and increase it to for example 15 or more seconds:

On the network

  1. If the hotfolders are on a network-shared drive, the issue might be network related. Check that there's a stable ping between the RIP computer and the network-shared computer.

  2. If the hotfolders are on a network share, temporarily create and use a local hotfolder on the hard drive of the RIP computer for testing purposes.
    • Use the local hotfolders for a while to see if the issue disappears. If a local hotfolder works fine the issue is probably related to the network connection.
    • To completely bypass any network transmission try to create a new folder on the RIP computer, configure a hotfolder to make use of it, and then drop files that are already present on the hard drive of the RIP computer in bulk into that folder for processing.
    • Check to see if the errors still occur when all files are local and using a new local folder instead of being transferred over the network.
  3. Restart the computer where the hotfolders are stored.

On the hotfolder

  1. The actual folders that serve as hotfolders might have become corrupted. Try to create new folders that must serve as hotfolders.

  2. Create new hotfolders in CalderaRIP and test to see if it solves the issue.

Other

The default parallelization value is 5. In the Terminal of your computer, set the max value for parallelization to 1:

echo 1 > /opt/caldera/lib/shared/max-running-wf
