How to manage cut marks on non-white media?

Applying a check/fix profile to an output file is available in the packages   2_PrimeCenter-Pro_30px.png 3_PrimeCenter-Max_30px.png

When printing on dark, transparent, or highly reflective metallic substrates, cutters may struggle to detect cut marks, barcodes, or QR codes accurately.

To improve detection, you can apply a background color, white or colored ink, under and around the marks. This is done applying the Add background to cutter registration marks check/fix profile to your output files.

This guide explains the available settings for this profile in PrimeCenter.

Prerequisites

Before applying the profile, you may need to learn more about check/fix profiles:

Define the background coverage area

Choose where to apply the background color:

  • Under registration marks: Adds a background color directly under each mark.

  • Full area under marks: Extends the background to cover a larger area around the marks.

Control how marks are printed over the background

To enhance contrast and improve cutter recognition, you can overprint the marks on the background.

Options include:

  • On: Marks are overprinted on the background color.
  • Smart: Marks are overprinted only if the background is defined as a spot color.
  • Off: Marks are not overprinted.

Adjust the background size around the marks

If you only want to add color under the marks, you can adjust the background size by setting a margin around them.

Set mark color/Add background

You can customize both the mark color and the background color:

  • Mark color: Change the color of the cut marks for better visibility.
  • Background color: Choose white or a custom-colored ink.
    • Spot color: Define a spot color name to retrieve it in CalderaRIP.
    • Transparency: Apply a percentage of transparency to the background spot color if needed.
