4. Linux Ubuntu installation

  Info

We recommend including your IT staff to assist you in the Linux installation process, especially if you are not comfortable with the terms used here.

After booting the computer from the USB flash drive (refer to this article for details about this step), you get to the Linux Ubuntu installer.

Continue reading or watch the next video. This guide is based on Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy JellyFish, but it can be used for other versions of Ubuntu.

  Recommendation

Before starting the Linux Ubuntu installation, we strongly advise connecting the computer to the Internet to ease the installation and prevent further issues when installing some programs.

       Global settings

  1. You should have already encountered the welcome screen inviting you to try or install Ubuntu.

      Info

By clicking on Try Ubuntu, you will preview Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer. You can return to the installer menu at any time by clicking on the Install Ubuntu shortcut (on the desktop).

  2. If you are ready, click Install Ubuntu. Next, you will need to select your keyboard layout (or click on Detect Keyboard Layout to have it done automatically). Once you’ve chosen one, click Continue.

    Installation setup

  3. Next, you will have to choose between the Normal installation and Minimal installation options: Caldera recommends you select the Minimal installation.

Under "Other options", you will be asked to review the boxes Download updates while installing Ubuntu and Third-party software...: these settings may improve the compatibility and performance of the computer during installation (such as Nvidia graphics drivers, for example), so we recommend that you check both boxes.

If you are not connected to the Internet, you will be asked to do so at this time. Make sure that you can stay connected during the entire installation.

    Drive management

  4. This screen allows you to customize the installation: from an installation from scratch in a dedicated station, select Erase disk, and install Ubuntu.

  5. Then click Install Now and confirm your changes with Continue.

      Info

On computers where another operating system is currently installed, you will be given additional options to install Ubuntu alongside that operating system instead of replacing it. This will require some additional steps not mentioned here: learn more about the dual-boot setup in this tutorial recommended by Ubuntu.

    Choose your location

  6. At this point, you need to select your location and time zone on the map screen and click Continue. Note that this information will be automatically detected if you are connected to the Internet.

    Creating your default account

  7. Next, you will be asked to create your default account. We recommend using:
    • "caldera" as the name.
    • "CalderaRIP" as the computer's name.
    • "caldera" as username.
    • "caldera" as password.

Choose between logging in automatically (recommended) or requiring a password at each login.

    Last installation steps

  8. After you finish configuring the installation, Ubuntu will be installed in the background.

  9. When the installation finishes, you will be asked to reboot your system. Click Restart Now.

  10. When you restart, you must remove the USB flash drive from the computer. Once it is done, press the Enter button.

  11. Enter your password at the login screen and that's it. You will then see your new Ubuntu desktop and the process will be finished.
