      Info

To have more details on the topic, please refer to this article dedicated to Spot Inks.

Multilayer

These roll printers support multilayer printing. The model designated for the American market supports printing in 1 or 2 layers only, while models available in other countries can print in 1 to 3 layers.

Job submission is processed in segments; however, layers are submitted simultaneously, with each layer printed line by line.

How to print advanced multilayer jobs?

Applicable to users of the "-ML" drivers (available since V19).

Recent driver versions enable printing of more advanced jobs on up to 3 layers. Please follow the steps in the articles below based on your production needs:

For step 5 ("Select the desired layer, then set your printing configuration"), proceed as follows:

  1. In the Print Module Interface, configure each layer as needed, ensuring that you select a quality compatible with white or metallic if your production requires it. Learn more about 2- or 3-layer combinations in the next chapter.
  2. If the layer contains a spot ink, navigate to Page Setup > White/Metallic tab, click "Enable Separation," and follow the steps outlined in the previous chapter.

How to print simple multilayer jobs?

Applicable to users of main drivers.

The legacy method allows you to print basic multilayer jobs using the same image across up to 3 layers. To do this:

  1. Go to the Printer Settings > Printer tab and configure the top, normal, and bottom layers. This will specify in which order you want to put your layers on the media. Available combinations:

    1 layer print

    2 layer print

    3 layer print

    Legend

White layer Color layer Metallic layer

  2. Go to Print Module Interface > Qualities, and select one compatible with the layer configuration:

      Info

The name of a quality designation assists in setting the correct configuration. A name that includes _2L indicates a two-layer configuration, while a name with _3L signifies a three-layer print. In this article is the list of resolutions available based on the media and mode when using Epson Precision Dot.

Options with Wh_3L (White + 2 Color Layers)

    • Layer Order:
      •  Bottom layer
      • Middle (normal) layer
      • Top layer
    • Meaning of the suffix for resolution/quality:
      • "1Way":  Two white layers on top of each other, which is an optimisation in a certain way
      • "2Way": Adjacent layers differ (e.g. Colors - White - Colors)

Example of "Wh_3L 2 Way"

Resolution in this example: "27 Pass Wh_3L 2Way - Bid" where...

  • 27 Pass: Stands for the number of printer passes
  • Wh_3L: 3-Layers, white plus 2 color layers
  • 2Way: Adjacent layers differ (e.g. Color–White–Color)
  • -Bid: Direction of printing (bi-directional in this case)

In CalderaRIP the setting appears as shown:
