Page Setup - Cutting - Registration Marks

The following information concerns users with GrandCut and/or VisualCut as optional modules.

The Registration Marks area has settings specific to cut marks. Click on the Plus/Cross (  ) button to display all settings:

  Info

Depending on your software version and your CalderaCare subscription, some of the features mentioned here may or may not be present.

A feature is not activated if it is greyed out even though it seems enabled. This usually happens when having two incompatible features enabled. Example: When enabling Edges registration marks and then enabling Instant cut just after print, the Edges registration marks gray out, and the feature applied to the graphic is Instant cut just after print.

When using a printer equipped with white ink, check the following two articles:

Edges registration marks

When enabled, it generates "Edge" registration marks. This includes the corner marks and the marks along the edge (intermediate marks). These will appear in the Preview window:

Automatic registration marks (ExtraMarks)

With this option, you can add cutting marks in the document between the image repetitions or between nested images.

To use the Automatic registration marks (ExtraMarks), the S&R > Contour nesting must be enabled:

When enabled, you can choose the Allocated Space for each mark and the minimal space between them (called Step).

Background

The following settings were included in V14.1 exclusively for CalderaCare subscribers.
In V15 they were included for all users.

This option is designed for the detection of cut marks on non-white materials, allowing you to define different values for the space around the registration marks. That space is usually white, in backlit jobs for example, so using Color or Color + White on layers can be very useful.

  • Background checkbox: For activating or deactivation the background.
  • Background size: Set the size of the background around the marks.

      Info

If automatic placement is checked, the automatic placement radius cannot be exceeded.

  • Background color: This opens an additional window in which you can select the color in different values (LAB, XYZ, or HSV | RGB, CMYK, or Grey):

Considerations

The background color will be applied to:

  • Edges registration marks.
  • Automatic registration marks (ExtraMarks).
  • Barcodes and/or QR Codes (from this Cutting tab).
  • Identification numbers.

The background of the registration marks will be automatically shaped, according to the marks themselves:

  • Round surroundings for round/square marks.
  • Specific shapes for other marks (Graphtec, Summa, ...).

  Good to know

Since V18, CalderaCare subscribers can also choose the background type and shape of the registration marks. See the dedicated chapter for more info.

For trimmer users: Starting with V17.2 you also have some basic settings to add white/color under marks. Learn more.

Layers

  • Color: Only color inks will be used
  • Color + White: Color inks and White are used
  • Only White: Only White ink is used

Example of using a round mark + a round background, with two different layering methods:

Color layers White layer

Considerations

To be able to print white on the background of the registration marks, you must enable the special ink in the corresponding tab. We also recommend you check the "Generate even if empty" option at the bottom:

About the separation methods:

  • It can be set as "Use a spot color" (if no specific selection is done).
  • The “Full page coverage” and "Generate from CMYK" separation methods can't be used with white as a background color for registration marks, nor can they be used with a layering method with white.

White density

This is the non-linearized density of the white background if Color + White or Only White is selected.

For example, if your White is limited to 50% in the linearization, and if you type "50" in the White density field, you will only have 25% of White printed.

Background type and shape

Exclusive to CalderaCare subscribers.

As of V18, CalderaRIP now includes selection fields for background type and shape for the registration marks, as well as new ways to combine the marks (and their background) with the surroundings:

Background type

  • None
  • Colored marks
  • White marks
  • Transparent marks
  • Colored marks + around

Example of using a White (White ink) mark + colored and White background, with two different layering methods:

Color layers White layer

Example of using a Transparent mark + colored and White background around only, with two different layering methods:

Shape

  • Auto
  • Disc (Round)
  • Square

Considerations

  • Round and square marks can now also have a square background. Example:

    Round mark +
    Round background
    Round mark +
    Square background
  • Shape selection is done by default based on the cutter model, but it can be overridden.
  • Some cutters that force surrounding shapes do not allow modifications (Graphtec, ...).

New ways of combining the settings

  • White marks and colored + White surroundings (allows using the inverted marks mode of Zünd cutters).
  • Transparent marks and colored + White surroundings (simplifies Direct-To-Film workflows).
  • Regular colored marks without White background, colored + White surroundings (allows reading a mirrored job from the other side on a transparent media).
  • Barcodes and QR codes:
    • Standard barcodes and QR codes can be used with the latest enhancements to the background of the marks.
    • Graphtec FC9000 and Summa S Series special marks and barcodes can also be used with them.

Known limitations

  • Kimla cutters' marks are currently incompatible with the new options available from V18 onwards but can be used with the basic options.
