Installation & Licensing
We have multiple output devices and CalderaRIP stations. Would PrimeCenter be installed on one machine to feed all the devices, or would it be installed on each RIP station?
The choice is yours, depending on the number of operators and workflow organization. We have customers who install PrimeCenter in prepress, on the RIP stations, or even on a server. PrimeCenter is typically installed where the team needs to regain their time to focus on other key tasks.
In practical terms, if your operators are struggling and keeping maintenance going, keeping the machines running, then clients will typically install PrimeCenter in Prepress. But if it's the opposite, where Prepress is pretty bogged down, we'll see that PrimeCenter gets installed on the “floor”.
How many CalderaRIP stations will a license get you? For example, we have 40 Canon Colorado printers, five EFIs, and one Kornit.
Rather than defining capacity in terms of the number of CalderaRIP stations, we refer to the capacity of the license itself. This capacity depends on whether the license is perpetual (with or without a CalderaCare contract) or subscription based.
Each type of license has different entitlements and scalability options. For a detailed breakdown of license capabilities and pricing, please refer to the dedicated page on our website.
Workflow Integration
[Comment] For those who don't currently have PrimeCenter, here's some information. We started using it about a year ago, and it has been a game changer. Collecting, modifying, and ganging DTF files used to take 1.5 to 2 hours per day, but now it takes under five minutes. We save time and were able to add a cutter, which eliminated the hours my team spent cutting DTF transfers. We can do things faster and more efficiently. None of that would have been possible without PrimeCenter.
Would PrimeCenter eliminate the need for the Canon Prisma Guide?
Yes, with PrimeCenter, you can perform all your simple 3- or 5-layer nesting and then submit it via CalderaRIP without requiring PrismaGuide. However, PrismaGuide is necessary for access to advanced Prisma features and special effects.
Is there a plan to merge PrimeCenter and CalderaRIP at some point?
No, PrimeCenter and CalderaRIP will not be merged into a single product.
Instead, we are improving their interoperability and integrating both platforms into a unified subscription experience: PrimeRIP. This approach combines PrimeCenter’s file management and workflow control with CalderaRIP’s advanced raster processing into a single, scalable, and cohesive solution.
Automation & Production Workflow
How long does it take to create recipes by ourselves?
Creating custom recipes takes varying amounts of time depending on the operator’s familiarity with editing tools and prepress workflows. To help new users, the software includes a set of preloaded, practical recipes that can significantly reduce setup time and allow users to begin production sooner.
Once the foundational recipes are established, the workflow becomes efficient and repeatable, enabling rapid processing of new jobs with minimal manual intervention.
How can I automatically delete, at regular intervals, the files and assemblies of each recipe without doing it manually? We work with around 280 large-format files daily and accumulating them is not practical.
Currently, automatic deletion of recipe files and assemblies at regular intervals is not available. However, when a recipe runs in "Silent mode", the software automatically deletes output files after completion, enabling efficient file management without manual intervention.
As part of our ongoing development, we plan to introduce more advanced cleanup options to support scalable, automated file management in future releases.
Is PrimeCenter better suited for repeat work or one-off custom jobs? Does it support all versions of CalderaRIP, or only the current versions? The main problem for us is the number of jobs we have to handle. Operators take shortcuts because there is no preflight check.
PrimeCenter delivers value for both repeat workflows and one-off custom jobs. Its automation capabilities allow you to streamline processing at key stages, even in non-repetitive projects. By enabling consistent preflight checks and automation, PrimeCenter helps reduce operator shortcuts and improves accuracy, especially in high-volume environments where workflow consistency is critical.
In most cases, cut or print files generated with PrimeCenter are compatible with all versions of CalderaRIP and other RIP products. However, certain features may require specific versions. For instance, the Multilayer Layout and Editing Tool introduced in PrimeCenter V4.4 only works with CalderaRIP v19 and later versions.
Layout, Nesting & Production Preparation
Can PrimeCenter step and repeat a tile, then add cut marks for the entire step-and-repeat print job?
Yes, PrimeCenter enables step-and-repeat tiling using the "Repeat Pattern" preflight profile. Once the pattern is applied, users can create a layout and add cut marks directly to it.
Good to know
Depending on their subscription, users can choose whether to apply these profiles manually or automatically, and they can configure the process to target either input or output files, depending on their workflow. For detailed instructions, please refer to the dedicated article.
How do you center-align the prints on the generated page? I notice that they always shift to the left.
Currently, it is not possible to center-align elements on the page. However, the R&D and Product teams are evaluating the addition of this feature for future releases.
Can we control the direction of the flute on cardboard printing?
You can control flute direction on cardboard by setting the material orientation and nesting angle to 0° or 180°. This ensures the flute runs in the intended direction and prevents unwanted rotation. Correct alignment produces consistent, predictable results in the final print.
Does PrimeCenter show how much material is used for each job? Thus, operators can more effectively monitor material consumption and/or waste, whether it's vinyl or rigid.
Yes. PrimeCenter shows material usage per job in both the interface (Layout > Media coverage), the PDF and the XML report (for Max users). This enables operators to track consumption accurately, whether for vinyl or rigid substrates, and supports better monitoring of waste and resource use.
Cutting Workflows
Does PrimeCenter automatically add registration marks and export cut information?
Yes. PrimeCenter automatically adds registration marks and exports all required cut data. Learn more.
Can the PDF export of the cut file have randomized dots? We have both a Zünd and a Matic cutter. The dots would need to be randomized so that we can use either machine.
This is not currently possible. The software does not support randomized dots or the Matic Helios cutter. This would require a dedicated driver and feature, making it a specialized request. The R&D and Product teams will assess the feasibility of adding this to future releases.
Could you put marks for two cutters on the same print file? For example, marks for a Summa plotter for print-and-cut vinyl. After cutting, weeding, and taping, we would put the vinyl on the Zünd machine to cut out the prints.
Although PrimeCenter supports several cutter drivers, it is not currently possible to use this workflow with PrimeCenter alone. However, it can be achieved by combining PrimeCenter with another product, such as CalderaRIP. In this setup, separate cut marks, such as those for a Summa plotter and those for a Zünd cutter, must be created within a single print file:
- While PrimeCenter generates the initial cut file and includes one set of marks, the second set of marks must be added during the RIP stage. This enables accurate placement of vinyl cut marks for the Zünd machine, ensuring precise alignment after weeding and taping.
- The final file includes both print and cut instructions, allowing for seamless transfer from the plotter to the Zünd machine. This integrated approach improves workflow efficiency, reduces manual handling, and ensures consistent, accurate results across both cutting operations.
Does PrimeCenter improve the information of the cut files sent to the ZCC (Zünd Cut Center) compared to using only the CalderaRIP?
Yes, PrimeCenter improves the information included in cut files sent to ZCC compared to using CalderaRIP alone.
While CalderaRIP transmits basic file data, PrimeCenter includes metadata from the original input files directly in the output, enabling better traceability, improved workflow visibility, and more accurate job management. As a result, users gain greater control and insight throughout the print-to-cut process.
Info
Metadata features are available only for PrimeCenter Max subscribers.
Does PrimeCenter support the CUTWORX Apex series?
PrimeCenter does not currently support the CUTWORX Apex series. Users are encouraged to submit feature requests through the official support channel, where they will be reviewed by the R&D and Product teams for potential future inclusion.
Info
A full list of supported devices is available on our supported devices page.
When I automate a multi-page PDF without nesting and only apply a cut, why does it export only the last page? For information: I'm just applying a cut to the PDF without nesting because nesting is done in the CalderaRIP. I appreciate PrimeCenter because it makes the work easier in many ways!
When you automate a multi-page PDF without nesting and apply only a cut, the software cannot recognize the page sequence, so only the last page is exported. With nesting enabled, the entire document is processed as a unified unit, resulting in accurate and complete output.
We often print the entire sheet, and the fiducials marks must be placed in the grommet holes for Coroplast sheets. How does PrimeCenter handle this in that case?
This is not currently possible. The software does not support placing crop marks directly in grommet holes. This would require a dedicated driver and feature, making it a specialized request. The R&D and Product teams will assess the feasibility of adding this feature to future releases.
Special Inks
Is there a way to create a localized white or varnish layer from a file?
If your production requires it, there is a dedicated preflight profile that allows you to create a white or varnish spot color directly from the page content. This offers a quick and practical solution for such cases.
We use the Caldera Direct-to-Film RIP after PrimeCenter. In the DTF RIP, a “Bright White” spot color settings must be changed for each individual nest (we use Simulated: Auto or Ignore) to underbase everything. What is the best setting to achieve this? Is there a way to apply the underbase to all nests at once without changing the settings each time?
Although the answer depends on further details (e.g., file types being used, file elements, spot colors), there are two possible solutions to this situation:
- The first option would be from PrimeCenter, where a recipe can be created using a "Convert Spot to Process" fix-up profile, which converts this "Bright White" to a Process Color. This allows the DTF RIP to later apply the smart white setting seamlessly. Learn more.
- The second solution, in the Caldera Direct-to-Film RIP, is to save the "Bright White" mapping to Ink: Blend (White) as a Favorite. It may also be useful to set the choke as a global setting in the printer settings and correctly set its values for this production setting.
Production Monitoring & Job Tracking
Can PrimeCenter help us keep track of which products are related to which orders?
Yes. PrimeCenter helps you track which products are linked to specific orders. You can extract order and product information from file names using metadata extraction. You can also sort and process jobs by order or client, enabling the generation of print and cut files that are clearly tied to their originating order.
If we have 50 jobs printed on one sheet, is there an easy way for the operator to see that at a glance?
Yes. Operators can see at a glance when 50 jobs are printed on a single sheet by exporting a “PDF Report” from the “Export Settings” menu. This report displays the full-page layout and individual job details, enabling quick visual verification of content and positioning.
Info
For Max users with integrated workflows, an “XML Report” is also available, containing the same information for detailed or automated processing.
We work with large batches of XML tickets with minimal supervision from PrimeCenter. It is difficult for us to track errors because only a sticky note appears, and it does not indicate which file had issues. We need a log that shows all the errors and the files in which they occur.
Although PrimeCenter's interface currently provides limited error visibility, a comprehensive "Production Report" is now available. You can enable this CSV-based error log in the Settings menu. It lists all errors and clearly identifies the files that encountered them. This feature allows for accurate tracking and troubleshooting of batch processing issues.
Additionally, within each recipe, users can configure automation to move failed files to a designated folder for inspection and correction, improving workflow efficiency.
In an upcoming release, the software will also support exporting detailed XML output job tickets for input files and generated layouts that fail to process. These tickets will include specific error messages tied to each file or layout, providing full traceability and deeper insight into processing failures.
Product Roadmap & Future Features
Are there any new features expected for PrimeCenter in 2026?
Yes, PrimeCenter is expected to introduce several key improvements in 2026. One of the most significant upcoming features is the evolution of the recently released File Inspector into a comprehensive File Editor. This new tool will allow users to review, modify, and validate file content directly within the prepress workflow.
The update will streamline error detection, improve file consistency, and enable faster and more confident production decisions. Building on the foundation of the current File Inspector, this improvement represents a major step forward in user productivity and workflow accuracy.
