How to add white or color under the marks?

The following information concerns users with GrandCut and/or VisualCut as optional modules.
The white/color under marks features were included in V14.1 exclusively for CalderaCare subscribers, but in V15 they were included for all users.

Cutter detection systems may have difficulties recognizing printed marks when cutting on non-white media, such as transparent, grey, dark, or metallic media.

By applying white (if it is available on the printer) or color ink both under and around the marks, CalderaRIP resolves these detection problems. The background color will be applied to:

  • Edges registration marks.
  • Automatic registration marks (ExtraMarks).
  • Barcodes and/or QR Codes (from the Cutting tab).
  • Identification numbers.

Example of a sticker with blue added under the barcode, ID number, and registration marks:

Process

  1. Open CalderaRIP.

  2. Open the Print Module of any of your printers.

  3. Go to Page Setup > Cutting tab. If you haven't already, click on Enable Cutting Contour:

  5. Activate the Background, set a size for it around the marks, and select a color.

      Good to know

Since V18, CalderaCare subscribers can also choose the background type and shape of the registration marks. See the dedicated article for more info.

For trimmer users: Starting with V17.2 you also have some basic settings to add white/color under marks. Learn more.

  6. On Layers, select Color+White or Only White.

      Info

The Color+White and White Only options are only relevant if your printer has White in its ink set.
Remember to enable the White in the Spot Inks tab if that's your case. For the Methods, select "Use a Spot Color" or "Fill a Contour". We also recommend you enable the option "Generate even if empty", at the bottom:

  7. You can also adjust the White Density (percentage of ink before linearization).

For example, if your White is limited to 50% in the linearization, and if you type "50" in the White density field, you will only have 25% of White printed.

  8. As mentioned in the warning at the bottom, you should set enough margin for the area of the color or white. To do so, go to Cutter Tools Configuration > Marks and margins.

The margins depend on the printer and the media but, as an example, we recommend a minimum of 30 mm for a page or 50 mm for a roll:
